Hawaiʻi Fire Department Responds to Blaze at Old Kona Landfill
Crews responded to a fire at the Old Kona Landfill this morning after workers heard an explosion and saw flames coming from a recycled aluminum pile, officials confirmed this morning.
The explosion was heard at around 8:22 a.m. Black smoke began billowing toward the sky. Hawaiʻi Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said there is no immediate threat for the fire to spread from the pile it started in.
Additionally, no injuries were reported and the source of the fire has not been determined.
Due to the nature of the blaze, Todd said, it will be several hours before it is extinguished.
