Halekiʻi Market in Kealakekua is going green to celebrate Lā Honua (Earth Day).

In celebration of Lā Honua, the market is focusing on sustainable living practices from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, featuring special interactive workshops for keiki and ‘ohana, performances, opportunities for engagement and activities for the whole family that highlight real life applications to mālama the ‘āina.

All events take place on the grounds of Kona Grill House located at 81-951 Haleki’i St. in Kealakekua.

Special Sust-ʻĀina-Bility guests for the April 2 celebration are:

  • Circle Pack Hawaiʻi: Shredding station for cardboard recycling into mulch, packing or pet bedding. For every contribution, guests will receive a free selection from the KiK Hālau Ka’eaikahelelani Garden harvest.
  • Hawaiʻi Community College Pālamanui: Workshop on planting with recycled cardboard with plants for keiki to take home.
  • Hiki Ola: Special variety of native Hawaiian plants available for purchase from Kealakekua Mountain Reserve.
  • Kumu’s Kitchen: Kumu Kahelelani will teach about sustainable farming done on Hālau Kaʻeaikahelelani grounds and make jam with fruit picked from the garden.
  • Build a Fairy Garden!: Bring any size of upcycled items — old coffee cups, coffee cans, tea pots, etc., for keiki to make their own unique garden creations.

  • Kona Lions Club: Donation drive of used prescription glasses/hearing aids.
  • “Community Cares with Tiana”: See how you can contribute to make a difference with cancer patients in the community.

For entertainment during next month’s market date, Halekiʻi welcomes back Randal’s Dance Fitness with a dynamic Zumba session for the entire family. Recording artist Keliko Kuailani also will return to the Halekiʻi concert stage, performing an acoustic set of contemporary and original mele.

The Halekiʻi Market experience features local crafts and art vendors, keiki entrepreneurs, fresh food and live music every first Saturday of the month. Come, eat, shop local, play and tell your story!
