HVNP Announces Flight Operations For March

Aircraft will again be flying over locations within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park throughout March.

The park announced flight operations for the month in a news release Tuesday, March 1. Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources and maintain backcountry facilities.

Flight operations to be conducted in March are:

• Between 8:30 and 11 a.m. March 7 for survey and control of invasive guinea grass in the Keauhou area, between sea level and 700 feet elevation.
• Between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. March 15 for ungulate surveys and control work in Kahuku between 4,000 and 7,000 feet elevation.
• Between 8:30 and 9 a.m. March 15 to remove old fence material near Nāhuku between 3,000 and 4,000 feet elevation.

In addition, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory could conduct flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.
