37 Motorists Arrested for DUI
Big Island police continue their pursuit to make roadways safe from drivers under the influence of an intoxicant.
According to a community message from the Hawai’i Police Department, during the week of Feb. 14-20, police arrested 37 motorists for DUI. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Four of the drivers were younger than 21 years old.
So far this year, there have been 166 DUI arrests compared with 178 during the same period last year, a decrease of 6.7%.
There have been 100 major accidents so far this year, the same number as last year by this time.
To date, there have been five fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities, compared with five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities for the same time period last year. This represents is an increase of 40% for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
