Police Nab 19 Motorists For DUI

During the week of Jan. 31 through Feb. 6, Hawai`i Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 105 DUI arrests compared with 133 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.1 percent.

There have been 75 major accidents so far this year compared with 70 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.1%.

To date, there were five fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities (one of which had multiple deaths), compared with five fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities for the same time last year. This represents is an increase of 40% for fatalities.
