NWS Forecasts Snow, High Winds for Big Island Summits

A winter storm watch, as well as a high wind watch, are anticipated for Big Island summits starting Friday evening.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu issued the weather watches this morning and anticipate them to go into effect on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. The winter storm watch is expected to continue through Saturday evening and the high wind watch is slated to be in place until Sunday evening.

Heavy snow is possible with snow accumulations of up to 4 inches. Southwest winds are expected to be 50 to 80 mph with localized gusts over 100 mph possible.

While these weather watches are in effect, travel through the summit areas could be difficult as blowing snow will reduce visibility at times, with periods of no visibility.

Anyone planning travel to the summits, including hikers and campers, should monitor the latest forecasts and consider postponing their trip until improved weather returns.

Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles. Serious injury could result from slamming doors and flying objects.

Residents in these areas are advised to take precautions now to protect their property and tie down loose objects or move them to a sheltered location.
