A spearfisher was reportedly bit by a small shark in Maui waters Sunday morning, according to the State Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Agency officials said a 27-year-old woman from Kaua´i reported that she was approximately 100 yards offshore of Mala Warf, near Lahaina, when what she believes to be a blacktip reef or Galapagos shark around 4-6 feet in length bumped her.

The shark disappeared from view after the incident but eventually returned, according to the victim’s report. At that point, the woman said she was bitten on the leg. There was no further attack attempts.

Maui Ocean safety rescuers responded to what DLNR officials have described as non-life threatening injuries. Warning signs were posted in the area.
