Volcano Woman Charged in Death of Bicyclist
A 40-year-old Volcano woman was charged Friday with negligent homicide in connection with the hit-and-run death earlier this week in Hilo of a 20-year-old bicyclist.
Police said other charges filed against Alison E. Taylor included inattention to driving, failure to provide information or render aid, accident involving death or serious injury and driving with a suspended license.
Police said the incident occurred shortly before 7:29 a.m. Wednesday when Taylor was traveling south on Kino‘ole Street and struck Brody Winslow, a Hilo resident from Wrightsville, N.C., who was riding a bicycle in the same direction. Taylor’s 2005 Toyota Tacoma then struck and severered a utility pole.
Police said Taylor then fled the scene south on Kino‘ole Street before being stopped by an off-duty police officer about four blocks away at Palai Street.
Taylor, who was initially arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants, was being held Friday pending an initial court appearance with her bail set at $8,500.
