Leeward and southern regions of all Hawaiian Islands are facing a third day of elevated fire risk due to specific weather conditions. Impacted portions of the Big Island include Kohala, Kona and Ka´ū Districts.
The National Weather Service on Tuesday, Sept. 21, extended the red flag warning for all islands through Wednesday at 6 pm. The initial warning has been extended twice. It was first issued on Monday, Sept. 20.
Gusty winds, dry fuels and low relative humidity levels will produce critical fire weather conditions on Wednesday. Red flag warnings do not predict new fire starts. However, any fires that develop will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
East to northeast trade winds of 15 to 25 mph, with stronger gusts, are in the forecast. Humidity is expected to range between 40-45% from mid-morning through the afternoon hours.
