DUIs Up 25 Percent Year-Over-Year

Hawai‘i Island police arrested 13 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant over the previous week. Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.  

So far this year, there have been 687 DUI arrests compared with 540 during the same period last year, an increase of 27.2%.

There have been 474 major accidents so far this year compared with 469 during the same period last year, an increase of 1.1%. 

To date, there have been 13 fatal crashes resulting in 13 fatalities, compared with 12 fatal crashes resulting in 12 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 8.3% for fatal crashes and 8.3% for fatalities. 

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island-wide.
