Flood Advisory Issued for Areas in West Hawai‘i

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a flood advisory for Hawai‘i County until 10:45 p.m.

At 7:38 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over the leeward slopes of the Kohala mountains from Waikoloa Village northward to Mahukona. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Minor flooding of low-lying and poor drainage areas can be expected. Some locations that will experience flooding include Waikoloa Village, Puako, Kawaihae, Kohala Ranch, Pu‘uanahulu, Kamuela, Mauna Lani, Waikoloa Beach and Mahukona.

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding. This advisory may need to be extended beyond 10:45 p.m. if flooding persists.
