Man Charged in End of the World Shooting Out on Bail

A Captain Cook man facing a murder charge in connection to the End of the World shooting is out on bail.

On Monday, June 28, 4Freedom LLC posted bail for Ioane Asagra, who was being held on a bench warrant of $550,000 in connection to the May 25 Keauhou shooting of Joey Richmond, the Hawai‘i County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney confirmed today.

The 27-year-old’s release comes two days before he is slated to appear in 3rd Circuit Court for an arraignment and plea on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree arson in the case.

Asagra is scheduled to appear before 3rd Circuit Court Judge Robert DS Kim on Wednesday, June 30. The prosecutor’s office has filed a motion requesting the court deny bail. If it’s granted, prosecutors say they will also request that Asagra be remanded back into custody.

This will be the second time prosecutors have filed a motion of no bail against Asagra within a week, who is also facing felony offenses in two robbery cases. On Monday, Deputy Prosecutor Kate Perazich filed a motion for no bail in one of the robbery cases. However, since the defendant didn’t consent to having the hearing via video, the matter was pushed to Aug. 6, according to court minutes.

Asagra was out on $572,025 bail in April when the shooting occurred in Keauhou last month. On May 25, police found Richmond shot multiple times on Keauhou Kainaliu Road, also known as End of the World. The next day, the victim’s vehicle was found in South Kona torched.

Asagra was charged in District Court with second-degree murder and first-degree arson in connection to the death of Richmond. Asagra was indicted in the case last week. On June 25, the 27-year-old appeared remotely from Hawai‘i Community Correctional Center before Judge Mahilani Hiatt in Kona where his case was discharged from District Court and moved to 3rd Circuit Court.

Asagra was arrested on June 16 on an outstanding warrant as well as on charges in connection to Richmond’s death. Asagra was taken into custody at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport after returning from O‘ahu where he received treatment at Straub Burn Center in Honolulu.

Asagra is facing life in prison with the possibility of parole in the murder case. However, according to the indictment, the prosecutor’s office alleges Asagra is subject to extended terms of imprisonment due to the fact he is a “persistent offender” and already convicted on two felonies. If the court grants the prosecutor’s terms, it would take away the possibility of parole.
