Central Hilo Mansion Highest Home Sale in Over 12 Years

Corcoran Pacific Properties last week announced a landmark sale for one of the largest homes ever built on the Big Island’s eastern coastline.

Measuring over 6,000 square feet with seven bedrooms and five bathrooms, the Ronald Nagata-designed mansion sold for $1,305,000 on Wednesday morning, May19 in Hilo. The sale price made the property the third-highest home sale of all time south of the Wailuku River and the highest single-family home sale in over 12 years for central Hilo.

“This was one of Mr. Nagata’s best works,” commented listing agent Nate Gaddis. “It’s the only property I’ve ever seen that fuses Neoclassical architecture with Buddhist temple-inspired design elements.”

Featuring a 30-foot ceiling, traditional Genkan entry and Furo spa, the property was once used as a Japanese corporate retreat. It sits on over an acre of land, replete with a swimming pool and orchid greenhouse.

The transaction took three agents seven months to complete, working across four time zones in two languages.  Asked about the clients involved, the listing agent offered “the seller was a successful entrepreneur from Beijing, and the buyer a businessman from the US mainland.”
