A fire in the Moa‘ula Farm Area destroyed a 1400-square-foot agriculture storage building on Monday, April 20. There were no reported injuries.
Hawai‘i Fire Department received a report about the Kau structure fire at approximately 1:33 p.m. When they arrived on scene the structure, a 900-square-foot metal frame agriculture garage-type building with metal roofing walls and a 500-square-foot wood frame kitchen area attached, was engulfed in flames and the roof had partially collapsed in the rear of the structure.
HFD units from Pahala, Nā’ālehu, and Volcano along with volunteer units from Discovery Harbour responded to structure fire within farm acreage in the Moa’ula Farm Area. The fire was extinguished and overhauled with hose lines from Brush Truck 11 and Tanker 11. Due to lack of water resources, a water shuttle operation utilized with water provided from volunteer units and Engine 19.
The cause of the fire is undetermined. According to HFD, the building is a total loss with damages estimated to be $52,500.
