UPDATE: Flood Advisory is Cancelled for Big Island

The Flood Advisory for the Island of Hawai‘i is cancelled. Weather radar showed that heavy rain has ended.

UPDATE: 5:33 AM, Sunday, May 5, 2019

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i County until 8 a.m.

At 5:30 a.m., radar indicated a line of heavy showers from North Kohala to Kailua-Kona. Rainfall rates up to 1 to 2 inches per hour are occurring and will continue over the next few hours.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Kailua-Kona, Waipio Valley, Pu‘uanahulu, Hawi, Kamuela, Kawaihae, Waikoloa Village, Pololu Valley, Kohala Ranch, Kalaoa, Halaula and Kapa‘au.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown

This advisory may need to be extended beyond 8 a.m. if heavy rain persists.

This advisory replaces the previously issued advisory that was in effect for portions of the island of Hawai‘i in Hawaii County.

This is a Civil Defense Flood Advisory message for Sunday, May 5, 2019, at 3:30 in the morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for North and South Kohala, Kona and Hāmākua.

A Flood Advisory means that conditions are favorable for flash flooding and can be life-threatening.

You are advised to take the following precautions:

-Do not cross fast flowing water in your vehicle or on foot.

-Stay away from low-lying areas prone to flooding.

-Remember, if lightning does threaten your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

Police report Highway 19 at mile 28 Kawalii Gulch is closed due to landslide.

All other roads are open at this time and advise that driving conditions are poor due to heavy downpours.
