Public Astronomy Talk to Explore Early Universe
W.M. Keck Observatory’s next free public astronomy talk will feature astronomy professor Matt Malkan of UCLA discussing “What’s New in the Young Universe?” The talk will be on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. at HPA’s Gates Performing Arts Center in Waimea.
Malkan will discuss the latest findings about the early formation of the universe following the Big Bang, and how inconsistencies in the fabric of the universe created the conditions for the first galaxies, stars and planets to form.
A key motivation behind the construction of the Keck twin telescopes was to investigate these processes, which are responsible for creating the elements and conditions to support life as we know it.
Malkan’s talk will offer a look at the latest progress in these investigations including recent breakthroughs as well as anticipated discoveries in the next several years.
