‘Matisse of Japan’ to Host Art Exhibit and Sale
The public is invited to attend a free open exhibit and art sale with Mayumi Oda—known as the “Matisse of Japan“—each Sunday from Nov. 25 to Dec. 23, at Gingerhill Farm Retreat.
The farm is located at 81-6467 Mamalahoa Highway in Kealakekua at the bottom of Ono‘uli Road past Konawaena Elementary School.
Oda’s artworks will include thankas, silkscreening, woodblocks and etchings. Other gift items will be available for purchase including greeting cards, books, prints, scarves, t-shirts and more.
She will be joined by special guest artist and Disney Studios animator JinAn Wong, who will present his limited edition original art, silkscreen prints and giclees.
Since 1969, Oda has presented more than 50 solo art shows internationally, and contributed to private and permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the U.S. Library of Congress and others. Oda is said to be intensely spiritual, sensitive and strong willed, painting authentically from her heart and never for commercial gain. In her early years, she was inspired by female beauty and form.
