Flood Advisory Extended for Parts of Big Island

The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the Flood Advisory for Hawai‘i County until 5 p.m.

At 1:56 p.m.,  radar showed the outer rain bands from Hurricane Lane moving over the Big Island from the east. Rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were over the windward slopes from Honoka‘a to Volcano.

Additional rain bands will continue to move over the east and southeast facing slopes of the island through the afternoon.

Locations in the advisory include but are not limited to Hilo, Na‘alehu, Pa‘auilo, Laupahoehoe, Orchidland Estates, Kukuihaele, Hawi, Pepe‘ekeo, Pāhoa, Honoka‘a, O‘okala, Hawaiian Paradise Park and Mountain View.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS

Stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Rainfall and runoff will also cause hazardous driving conditions due to ponding, reduced visibility and poor braking action.

Do not cross fast flowing or rising water in your vehicle, or on foot. Turn around, don’t drown.
