Volcano Art Center to Present Pele Kaio with Unulau
Volcano Art Center’s 2018 Hula Kahiko series continues on Saturday, Mar. 10, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a performance by Kumu Hula Pele Kaio with Unulau.
From Hawaiʻi Community College UNUKUPUKUPU, Kumu Hula Pele Kaio combines ancestral knowledge with the rigors of academia to present the haumāna of Unulau. These dance express hula as a process for deep inner reflection and analysis.
The performance is part of a year-round series sponsored by Volcano Art Center presenting hula hālau from across Hawai‘i Island in an authentic outdoor setting within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Attendees are encouraged to bring sun/rain gear and sitting mats. Performances will be held rain or shine.
In conjunction with the Hula Kahiko performance, the Volcano Art Gallery will host Native Hawaiian cultural specialist Loke Kamanu and her ʻohana as they teach the art of hula, hula implements and lei making. The demonstrations are hands-on and family friendly, and occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Hula Kahiko performance days.
Both events are free to attend. National Park entrance fees may apply. To learn more, call Volcano Art Center at (808) 987-8222 or visit www.volcanoartcenter.org.
