The Hawaiʻi Electric Light Company will host an Arbor Day Tree Giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 4, at its office located in Hilo from 9 a.m. to noon, or while supplies last.

Part of North Kohala’s historic Nā Hala O Naue hala grove remains on the ‘Āinaho‘i at Niuli‘i property recently gifted to The Kohala Center. The Center plans to restore the grove and provide cultural practitioners and weavers with access to this precious resource. Photo courtesy of The Kohala Center.

Trees that will be given away this year include kukui, kokiʻo, keʻokeʻo, niu, milo, kou, and kōʻokoʻolau.

The annual event, in partnership with Kua O Ka La Public Charter School, Hooulu Lahui, Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program, is to help perpetuate native species.

Kua O Ka La students care for the trees and compile a newsletter to distribute with the trees. Information on how to properly plant, site, and care for the tree will also be distributed.
