Big Island Long Distance Training Camp, May 31-June 2

The Big Island Sports Academy will host a long distance training camp called “Run on a Volcano and Achieve Greatness,” for high performance athletes ages 13-18, from May 31 to June 2, at the Kīlauea Military Camp.

The camp is geared towards athletes that wish to prepare for off-season training programs, off-season road races, cross country and developmental workouts for track and field.

The camp will feature a staff of coaches who have experience in developing high school and college athletes. The camp will be led by Coach Patrick Bradley, the Head Coach of Cross Country and Track and Field at Konawaena High School.

Dr. Bradley was a former collegiate All American at Texas A&M University, is a two time Olympic Trials participate, a member of Athletes West, a highly competitive NIKE sponsored track club, and a staff member at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He will install many of the drills and training progressions he has used during the camp.

Coach Bradley is credited with the revival of the Konawaena High School Cross Country and Track programs, which culminated with the Wildcats claiming the HHSAA State Division II Championship in Cross Country last season. He will also have members of his Konawaena staff and former high school champion distance runners on board to assist.

Also, serving on the staff will be Jaime Guerpo, the Head Cross Country Coach at the University of Hawai’i Hilo, and Ryan Cabalse, the highly successful Head Coach at Kamehameha-Hawai’i.

The camp will serve to provide a basis of information and skill development which will allow the participants to gain a foundation on which to base their off-season training programs. Each participant will be given an individual evaluation and progressive training handbook.

The camp will be hosted at the Kīlauea Military Camp, participants will be provided accommodations, meals and a running camp t-shirt.

Sessions include running the trails before breakfast and strategy, question and answers with coaches and successful athletes. A video analyst and a wrap up race will also be featured.

The fee for all sessions, including room and board, is $150. A 15% team discounts is available for teams of at least four runners. Day of the event registration is $175.

BISA will provide sliding scale and fee scholarships for some participants upon coaches recommendation.

Registration and check-in will be on Wednesday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the Kīlauea Military Camp’s registration office.

The first session begins at 3 p.m., with participants joining the instructional staff for an orientation session and organizational meeting.
