VSAS Theatre Night: Fairy Tales Galore!

The Volcano School of Arts & Sciences Middle School will host a night of fairy tales at the Kīlauea Theater on Dec. 8 at 6 p.m.

The free event is a culmination of students first semester of theatre study.

Three crazy fairy tale inspired creations will be presented.

The sixth grade will perform the Susanna Hargreaves production of “A Mixed-up Fairy Tale.”

The students will reinact the entire world of fairy tales that will be mixed up in one-act.

The plot line: The Grimm brothers are writing their stories late into the night when suddenly a gust of wind flings open the door and blows the pages everywhere.

Later that night, the stories begin to intermingle in Wilhelm’s dreams. Cinderella’s desperately trying to get to the royal ball, but somehow she ends up at Rapunzel’s tower.
As her Fairy Godmother mistakenly sends her on to the Seven Dwarves’ cottage and Snow White’s castle, Cinderella meets loads of new friends — dwarves, bears, pigs, and witches, all of whom are just as lost and out of place as she is.

The seventh grade will perform the Dustin Robert Blakeman comedy “Jack vs. Jill.”

The plot line: Jack and Jill meet for the first time after that fateful day on the hill…in a courtroom.

Jack — the scar on his crown forever serving as a reminder of his tumble — must defend himself against Jill’s accusations of malicious hill-pushing.

Finally, the eighth grade will perform the Brian D. Taylor production of “Revenge of the Pigs.”

The plot line: Afraid of the big bad wolf?

Not these little pigs in this funny fractured fairy tale.

After their homes are destroyed, Peg, the drama queen, and Alfalfa, who’s a couple straws shy of a full haystack, are not happy, so they seek revenge against that big bad wolf, Gusto, who also happens to be a master of disguise though his snippety wife, Wendy, would disagree.

After their intellectual brother Mason refuses to get involved because his house, complete with a new Jacuzzi mud bath, is just fine, the two little pigs decide to seek help elsewhere. Luckily, there are plenty of volunteers!

Little Red Riding Hood, a boy who thinks it’s funny to cry wolf, another boy named Peter and his constantly fighting friends Bird and Cat all agree to the wolf hunt. With the plans in place to lead Gusto into their trap, the team of avengers is certain that nothing could go wrong.

Through the hysterical ending, they learn that revenge isn’t always so sweet. And maybe that big bad wolf isn’t as big and bad as everyone thought.

The show will be held at Kīlauea Theater at the Kīlauea Military Camp.
