Humane Society to Hold Monthly Microchip Clinics

The Hawaii Island Humane Society will hold a new monthly microchip clinic in the Kau District the first Saturday morning of the month at the Ocean View Saturday Market.

This month’s HIHS microchip clinic will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Microchipping is permanent identification using a safe, simple injection of a microchip beneath the surface of the pet’s skin and between the shoulder blades. Microchipping is similar to a routine shot; no anesthetic is required. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is encoded with a unique identification number.

“Microchip identification can quickly identify lost pets and reunite them with their owners,” said HIHS Executive Director Donna Whitaker. “We are pleased to be able to bring this technology to the residents of Ocean View and the more remote southern areas of our island on a regular monthly schedule.”

The cost for the microchipping is $10 per pet. Registration for future free spay/neuter appointments will also be available.
