Police Seek Hilo Pawn Shop Theft Suspects

Hawaiʻi Island police are asking for the public’s help identifying two men whose images were captured on a surveillance camera during a theft in downtown Hilo on May 26.

At approximately 3:10 p.m., a man entered a pawn shop on the 200 block of Kīlauea Avenue and engaged in conversation with a sales clerk in an apparent attempt to distract the clerk.

A second man then entered the store and removed a vintage Kamaka ‘ukulele from a display. Both men then left the area on foot.

Both men were described as being in their mid-20s.

One of the suspects is described as Caucasian, approximately 5-foot-10-inches tall, weighing 150 pounds. He has light hair, and was wearing a baseball cap, a dark-colored long-sleeved shirt and light-colored shorts.

The other suspect is described as Polynesian, approximately 5-foot-9-inches tall and 140 pounds. He has dark, wavy hair. He was wearing a light-colored T-shirt, jeans and black and white athletic shoes.

Police ask anyone with any information about this case or the identity of the persons in the photo to call the police department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Officer Lawrence Kobayashi at 961-2213.
