No Tsunami Threat Following Earthquake off Coast of Ecuador

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center says there is no tsunami threat to Hawai’i following a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred near the coast of Ecuador.

According to PTWC, the earthquake occurred Thursday at 6:47 a.m. Hawai’i time.

United States Geological Survey officials say the earthquake was located 14 miles northwest of Rosa Zarate, Ecuador; 28 miles east-southeast of Muisne, Ecuador; 31 miles south of Propicia, Ecuador; 59 miles northwest of Santo Domingo de los Colorados, Ecuador; and 90 miles west-northwest of Quito, Ecuador.

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake also shook in a similar area Tuesday night at 9:57 p.m. Hawai’i time. No tsunami was generated by that earthquake.
