Famous Koa Racing Canoe Malolo to Return to Miloli’i

Koa racing canoe Malolo will return to the Big Island on Saturday, April 23.

Malolo, and sister canoe Nai’a, will arrive in Miloli’i Bay.

The return of the canoe is part of a three-year restoration project, “The Malolo Project,” conducted under the direction of master koa canoe craftsman Bill Rosehill.

More than 70 years ago, John D. Kaupiko took the 1928 canoe, built by Kekemu Kawaauhau, to Oahu, where in 1954, it won the Moloka’i Channel race and set a 6:05 record.

After undergoing a restoration period, the canoe will return to the Miloli’i fishing village.

At 10 a.m., Malolo and Nai’a will return to Miloli’i by ocean. A traditional Hawaiian protocol ceremony and blessing with take place after their arrival.

The years-long project was supported by the Hawai’i Tourism Authority, Hawaiian Airlines & HANA HOU Magazine, and the Hawai’i Canoe Racing Association.

The public is invited to join in the arrival and ceremony.
