HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown
Twelve motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between April 4-10. Four of the 12 arrested were involved in traffic crashes. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 301 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 15.8 percent increase from last year’s count of 260 arrests during the same time period.
Major accidents have decreased by 3.7 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 395 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 410 during the same time period in 2015.
Six fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways, one of which resulted in multiple deaths. Those crashes resulted in seven fatalities. Five fatal crashes had occurred at this point last year, with a total of seven traffic fatalities. The numbers represent a 20 percent increase for fatal crashes.
HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
