HSPLS Celebrates ‘National Library Week’ All Month Long
In celebration of National Library Week 2016, libraries across the Big Island and state will conduct free educational and entertainment programs throughout April.
Performances includes two guest artists, a storyteller from India, and a Washington state children’s book author and folklorist.
Storyteller Jeeva Raghunath, author of “Anbudan Jeeva” and storyteller from India, will share stories featuring a musical donkey, clever wives, tricksters, and silly stories enhanced with music, rhythm, and dance at two Big Island libraries.
Raghunath’s interactive storytelling style highlights India’s culture, tradition, customs, and food.
On April 11 at 6:30 p.m., Raghunath will be at the Mountain View Public & School Library, and on April 13 at 5:30 p.m., she will be at Kealakekua Public Library.
On April 27 at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively, storyteller Dr. Margaret Read MacDonald, author of “Fat Cats, Magical Roosters, and Pesky Fairies,” will have a presentation at the North Kohala Public Library and the Kailua-Kona Public Library.
Dr. MacDonald is a Washington state children’s book author and folklorist who has written more than 65 books on folktale and storytelling topics, including award-winning picture books “Mabela the Clever” and “Go to Sleep Gecko.”
Slack key guitarist Jeff Peterson will share his passion for the guitar in words and music. His focus on slack key guitar, classical, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while being deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage.
Peterson will perform at the Hilo Public Library on April 9 at 11 a.m. as part of the library’s 65th anniversary, and again on April 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Pahala Public & School Library.
Storyteller Janice “Auntie Jan” Morimoto, author of “Island Kine Stories,” will present humorous folktales, poetry, and participatory games from around the world adapted to “local” style on April 25 at 1:30 p.m. at Laupahoehoe Public & School Library.
Presentations by morimoto are also scheduled on April 25 at 5:30 p.m. at Honoka’a Public Library and April 27 at 1:30 p.m. at Thelma Parker Memorial Public & School Library.
The National Library Week programs are suitable for those ages five and older. Young children must be accompanied by a caregiver.
