Hilo Public Library to Celebrate 65th Anniversary on Saturday

The Hilo Public Library, part of the Hawai’i State Public Libraries System, will celebrate its 65th Anniversary on Saturday, April 9.
Members of the public are invited to join in on the free event, beginning at 9 a.m. with the Royal Order of Kamehameha protocol and blessing of the Naha and Pinao stones that stand in front of the library.
Jeff Peterson, a Hawaiian music Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner, will perform at 11 a.m., followed by Halau o Mailelaulani at 1 p.m.
Local artists, hula, and displays of Hilo history will fill out the rest of the day. Cake and refreshments will also be available.
The Friends of Hilo Public Library, Friends of the Library of Hawai’i, Starbucks, AirGas Hawai’i, and Matheson Tri-Gas are sponsoring the anniversary event.
The Royal Order of Kamehameha’s blessing of the legendary and sacred Naha and Pinao Stones will mark the stones’ 100th year with the library. The Naha stone is believed to be what King Kamehameha lifted to affirm the prophecy that he would unite the Hawaiian Islands.
