Merrie Monarch Group, Overall Results

It has been a long time since Johnny Lum Ho and the wahine of Hālau o Ka Ua Kani Lehua has been on top at the Merrie Monarch Festival.
Lum Ho’s Hilo hālau swept the major awards in ladies hula Saturday night on the final night of the Merrie Monarch Festival at the Edith Kanaka’ole Multi-Purpose Stadium. Hālau o Ka Ua Kani Lehua won Friday night’s Hula Kahiko competition and Saturday night’s Hula ‘Auana before taking home the big prize, the Wahine Overall title.
It was the first group and overall win on the wahine side for Lum Ho’s hālau since 1993.
Saturday night was also a big night for O’ahu’s Hālau Nā Mamo o Pu’uanahulu, who took home the men’s Hula ‘Auana and overall titles. It was the first ‘Auana victory for the Kapahulu hālau since 2009 and first overall kāne title since 2008.
Hālau Hula ‘O Kahikilaulani was named the winner of Friday night’s Hula Kahiko. The Hilo hālau, under the direction of Kumu Nāhōkūokalani Gaspang, won the category for the first time since 1991.
