UPDATE: Flood Warning Extended to 2:30 a.m. Saturday

The National Weather Service has once again extended a Flash Flood Warning for the Big Island.

As of 11:17 p.m., radar and gauges were reporting heavy showers and thunderstorms across the North Kona and Kohala districts.

According to NWS, the rainfall is falling in areas with already saturated grounds and could result in flooding.

Flooding has been noted along Highway 270 and Highway 190 in the Kohala area.

Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Kapaau, Honokaa, Honomu, Kamuela, Puuanahulu, and Pohakuloa are areas included in the warning.

The Flash Flood Warning has been extended through 11:30 p.m. Radar is showing heavy rainfall just offshore of Kona and Kohala with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. This rainfall is moving into already saturated grounds and will likely result in additional flooding within the warning area. The rainfall is expected to continue, heavy at times, for another couple hours before tapering off.

A Special Marine Warning is also in effect for a large area of strong thunderstorms capable of producing winds 34 knots or greater and small hail. The strongest storms were located 8 nautical miles southwest of Upolu Point and moving east at 15 knots. Mariners can expect gusty winds, high waves, dangerous lightning and heavy rains. Boaters should seek safe harbor immediately until this storm passes.

Frequent lightning is occurring with this storm. If caught on the open water stay below deck if possible and keep away from ungrounded metal objects.
