Twenty motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between March 14 and March 20. Seven of the 20 arrested were involved in traffic crashes, while one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 251 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 21.3 percent increase from last year’s count of 207 arrests during the same time period.
Broken down by district, one arrest took place in the Hamakua district and four arrests took place in the South Hilo district. Four occurred in the Puna district, while 11 were listed in the Kona district.
Major accidents have decreased by 3.8 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 304 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 316 during the same time period in 2015.

Four fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways, one of which resulted in multiple deaths. Those crashes resulted in five fatalities. Three fatal crashes had also occurred at this point last year, with a total of five traffic fatalities. The numbers represent an increase of 33.3 percent in fatalities.
HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
