Hirono Votes Against Legislation to Override State GMO Labeling

Senator Mazie Hirono voted against legislation on Wednesday that would override state laws that require labeling of genetically modified food products.

Under the legislation, a voluntary labeling of genetically modified food products would be implemented and a mandatory disclosure program would only be created if the United States Department of Agriculture found insignificant adoption of the voluntary standard by industry after a three year period.

As a whole, the measure did not advance in the Senate under a 49-48 vote.

“As a longtime advocate for consumer choice, I support a mandatory federal label that will allow families in Hawai’i and across the country to make more informed decisions about the foods they choose to buy,” said Senator Hirono. “I opposed Senator Roberts’ proposal because it would override state labeling laws and prevent states from being able to take future action on the issue without requiring a strong federal alternative. I look forward to considering alternative proposals that empower consumers.”
