Sulphur Banks Trail at HVNP Undergoes Improvements
Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park’s Sulphur Banks Trail and boardwalk are undergoing a improvement and repair project.
As result of the work, partial trail closures will take place Monday through Thursday.
Park crews will widen sections of the trail for better viewing of interpretive exhibits, as well as improve accessibility for the disabled. The replacement of rotting boards will also be conducted.
HVNP officials anticipate that work on the trail will be completed by the end of June.
Weekend use of the trail, from Friday through Sunday, will remain fully open to the public. Loop hikes along Sulphur Banks Crater Rim trails will not be accessible as a result of the work, but a portion of the trail will be open from either Kilauea Visitor Center or the Steam Vents access points.
At the Sulphur Banks, known also as Ha‘akulamanu, HVNP visitors will find a scenic and easy trail that goes to an area where volcanic gases create colorful sulfur crystals and other minerals painted in the landscape.
