Trump Wins Hawai’i GOP Caucus
Business mogul Donald Trump won the Hawai’i Republican Presidential Caucus on Tuesday night.
The Hawai’i Republican Party held the caucus at several different polling sites around the state, including 10 different places on the Big Island.
Trump received 5,677 votes, garnering 42.4 percent of votes from the state’s registered republicans. Texas Senator Ted Cruz finished in second with 4,379 votes, or 32.7 percent of the vote. Florida Senator Marco Rubio finished farther back in third place with 1,759 votes, gaining just 13.1 percent of votes. John Kasich, governor of Ohio, rounded out the GOP field of four with 1,413 votes, or 10.6 percent.
A total of 19 delegates were at stake in Tuesday night’s caucus. The Associated Press projects that Trump will receive 10 of those delegates.
Big Island caucus goers dropped their ballots in line with the order of finish. Trump got 955 votes on the Big Island, taking 47.7 percent of the island’s vote. Cruz got 28.07 percent of Big Island votes, while Rubio (11.59 percent) and Kasich (11.44 percent) rounded out the group.
