Police Warn of Ongoing Lottery Scam
An ongoing lottery scan continues to find itself in the hands of Big Island residents.
The Hawai’i Police Department reports that residents are receiving letters than claim the recipient has won a substantial amount of money and must pay a “processing fee” before the prize is dispersed.
Within the mailing is an “authentic-looking check.”
Authorities say the check typically exceeds the stated processing fee, and recipients who follow the directions to call the number listed are directed to mail the sender a personal check.
Once sending the request, victims of the scam find that the check sent is in fact a scam.
Efforts to contact the lottery company afterward results in a disconnected number.
Anyone who receives this type of mail should not respond.
