Twenty-five motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Feb. 15 and Feb. 21. Eight of the 25 arrested were involved in traffic crashes. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
A total of 155 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2016. That number is a 16.5 percent increase from last year’s count of 133 arrests during the same time period.
Broken down by district, one of the arrests took place in the Hamakua district, and four of the arrests this week occurred in the South Hilo district. Nine occurred in the Puna district, one was listed in the Ka’u district, while eight were reported in the Kona district and two were reported in the South Kohala district.
Major accidents have decreased by 8 percent, compared to last year. During the first seven weeks of 2016, 183 major accidents have taken place. That number compares to 199 during the same time period in 2015.

Two fatal traffic crashes have occurred on Big Island roadways. Those crashes resulted in two fatalities. Two fatal crashes had also occurred at this point last year. One of those crashes resulted in multiple deaths, totaling four fatalities.
HPD will continue to patrol the island and maintain roadblocks.
