Visitor Dies While Swimming at ‘End of the World’
Rescue crews from the Hawai’i County Fire Department recovered the body of a male visitor at “End of the World” in Keauhou on Monday.
Hawai’i County Fire Department Assistant Batallion Chief Ty Medeiros told Big Island Now that the 36-year-old man went swimming in an area that had large waves and swells. His girlfriend left to call 9-1-1 after he struggled to get out of the water. By the time she returned, he was missing.
Members of HFD’s Keauhou Fire Station, along with the United States Coast Guard actively searched the area.
At about 4:10 p.m., Chief Medeiros said that the man was found dead about 20 yards from where he had initially entered the water.
The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members.
