UH-Hilo’s Russell Named PacWest Player of the Week
University of Hawai’i at Hilo senior Jordan Russell shot his way to the PacWest Conference’s top men’s basketball weekly award.
Russell, a point guard from Tacoma, Wash., was named PacWest Player of the Week in men’s basketball on Monday for games played between Jan. 18-24.
It’s hard to find a hotter shooter right now in the conference. Russell hit seven treys in each of his team’s last two games, going 14-for-26 from distance for the week. Teammate Parker Farris also hit 14 treys for the week, with nine of them coming in a record-setting performance against Fresno Pacific on Jan. 18.
Russell set a career high with 33 points in Saturday’s 66-64 victory over Hawai’i Pacific University. Two nights earlier, he scored 29 points in a loss to Dixie State.
For the week, Russell averaged 21.7 points per game and shot 57.9 percent from the floor.
UH-Hilo finishes off its five-game homestand against 15th-ranked California Baptist on Monday. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Afook-Chincn Civic Auditorium. The game will be broadcast on AM 850 in Hilo, AM 790 in Kona, and at ESPNHawaii.com.
