Kohanaiki Beach is closed until further notice because of hazardous conditions caused by a boat that ran aground in the vicinity of the park.

Hawai’i County Civil Defense reports that the small boat ran aground on Friday in an area near the beach, which is commonly referred to as Pine Trees Beach. Fuel leaked from the boat onto the immediate area of the beach, and debris from the boat was also found in the area.

Swimmers and surfers are being asked to stay out of the water until authorities can clean up the fuel spill and remove the boat from the area. It is not known when the beach park will reopen.
