One Night Only: No. 2 at the UHH Performing Arts Center
7:30 p.m. on Thursday February 9, the University of Hawai’i at Hilo Performing Arts Center will host a one woman play entitled No. 2. This critically acclaimed production will be performed for one night only and feature actress Madeleine Sami.
Sami will embody a total of nine characters throughout the night and bring the words of playwright Toa Fraser to life. According to Lee Dombroski, UHH Performing Arts Center Manager, Sami, who plays matriarch Nanna Maria, and eight other characters, is having a feast. This festive occasion will feature a surprise guest, chosen by Maria, and will be marked by the naming of her successor.
” The play takes place one scorching hot summer’s day when family matriarch, Nanna Maria, wakes up and decides she wants a feast complete with pig on a spit, red wine in bottles, not cartons, and a priest, just like in Italy, said Dombroski.”
In 1999 this production won The Chapman Tripp New Zealand Award for best New Zealand Play. This piece was also made into a film and premiered in 2006 at the Sundance Film Festival.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 discounted and $7 for students and children. The box office is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The UHH Performing Arts Center is located on campus at 200 West Kawili Street.
