HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown

Eighteen motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways between Dec. 7 and Dec. 13. Six of the 18 arrested were involved in traffic crashes. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.

A total of 1,028 DUI arrests have been made so far in 2015. That number is a 6.5 percent decrease from last year’s count of 1,099 arrests during the same time period.

Major accidents are down by just under 2.1 percent, compared to last year. So far this year, 1,453 major accidents have taken place, compared to 1,484 at the same point in 2014.

Traffic fatalities are up by 54.5 percent, compared to one year ago. Seventeen traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways. At this time in 2014, 11 traffic fatalities had occurred. Those 17 fatalities occurred in 14 fatal crashes, an increase of fatal crashes by 27.3 percent compared to last year.

Of the 17 fatalities, HPD reports that six were related to drugs and five were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol. Those 11 fatalities
