November Hawaiian Cultural & After Dark in the Park Events

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park will continue to share its Hawaiian Culture and After Dark in the Park programs throughout the month of November.

Admission to the cultural and after dark programs are free, but park entrance fees apply and a $2 donation helps supportthe programs.

Hula Performance by Hālau o Akaunu. 

Enjoy the traditional, dynamic and talented dancers of Hālau o Akaunu, a Hilo-based hula group under the instruction of kumu hula Manaiakalani Kalua on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Akaunu was created in 2012, and the ‘ōlapa (dancers) perpetuate the ‘aiha‘a style which was born of this landscape. Kumu Manaiakalani received his ‘ūniki (training) from Taupōuri Tangaō, kumu hula for Unukupukupu, whose foundation comes from the traditions of Hālau o Kekuhi. Part of Hawai‘i Volcanoes’ Nā Leo Manu, “Heavenly Voices” performances. The performance will take place at the Kilauea Visitor Center auditorium.

Amazing Birds and Megafauna Adventures in Botswana, Africa! 

The vast expanse of the Kalahari Desert is punctured at its heart by the Okavango River, forming the largest inland delta in the world. These waterways and wetlands support one the most amazing collection of birds, bugs and brawling beasts on our planet! Join Park Ranger Jay Robinson and Biologist Jack Jeffrey on a fun-filled photo safari through the National Parks and World Heritage Site of northern Botswana. The adventure will end at one of the seven wonders of the natural world, Victoria Falls, in nearby Zimbabwe. The event, Part of Hawai‘i Volcanoes’ ongoing After Dark in the Park series, will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kilauea Visitor Center Auditorium.

Learn to Play ‘Ohe Hano Ihu. 

Learn about the traditional uses of ‘ohe (bamboo) in Hawai‘i, including its use in creating musical instruments like ‘ohe hano ihu, the Hawaiian nose flute on Wednesday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Create your own ‘ohe hano ihu while learning about Hawaiian culture. Part of Hawai‘i Volcanoes’ ongoing ‘Ike Hana No‘eau “Experience the Skillful Work” workshops. The workshop will be held on the Kilauea Visitor Center lanai.
