Hurricane Olaf Tracking North Away From State

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center reports that Hurricane Olaf is tracking north in the Pacific and remains well east of the Big Island.

As of 5 a.m., Hurricane Olaf was about 540 miles east of Hilo, holding maximum sustained winds of 120 miles per hour as it moved in a north-northeast direction.

Hurricane Olaf is maintaining Category 3 hurricane strength, but is expected to weaken through Sunday night.

A high surf warning has been extended for East facing shores through 6 a.m. Sunday. A high surf advisory is posted for south facing shores until 6 p.m. Saturday, and a Small Craft Advisory is posted for all waters through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Swells generated by Hurricane Olaf will produce life-threatening and potentially damaging surf along east facing shores of the state throughout the weekend.
