Hurricane Oho Quickly Moves Away from Hawai’i

As of 5 a.m., Hurricane Oho remained a powerful storm as it pushed towards the north-northeast away from Hawai’i at 35 miles per hour, holding maximum sustained winds of 110 mph.

The storm was located about 645 miles east-northeast of Hilo Wednesday morning, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

CPHC says Hurricane Oho continued to have an eye in infrared satellite this morning, but that the storm likely reached its peak early Wednesday.

With Hurricane Oho’s peak intensification behind it, forecasters says that it will gradually weaken over the next 24 hours, with a quicker pace of weakening beyond that time frame. Within 36 hours the storm, is predicted to no longer have tropical characteristics as it loses its deep convection near the inner core.

As Hurricane Oho leaves the Hawaiian Islands behind, large swells have impacted coastlines Wednesday morning. Elevated surf is expected through Wednesday along east facing shores of the Big Island.
