Traffic Signal Maintenance Rescheduled

Traffic signal work at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Bayfront Highway that was originally scheduled on Sept. 20 due to poor weather conditions has been rescheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4.

The Hawai’i County Department of Public Works says work in the area will consist of maintenance on the traffic signals between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., pending weather conditions.

During the maintenance, some lanes at the Kamehameha Avenue and Bayfront Highway intersection will be limited.

As drivers are entering Hilo on Bayfront Highway, coming in from the Singing Bridge, lanes turning onto Waianuenue Avenue will be closed.

In addition, drivers heading in the Hamakua direction on Kamehameha Avenue will not be permitted to make a right turn onto Bayfront Highway.

Those heading down Waianuenue Avenue towards the ocean will not be able to head straight through onto Bayfront Highway, as that lane will close.

DPW officials say that lanes on Bayfront Highway, both headed towards town and Hamakua, will both remain open for straight through traffic.

Along Kamehameha Avenue, those driving in the Hamakua direction will be permitted to drive straight through and to make a left turn.

The right turn lane for those heading down Waianuenue Avenue will also remain open.

Off-duty police officers will direct traffic as the traffic signals are shutdown.

Those who need to drive in the area are advised to anticipate delays. Individuals who can use an alternate route are encouraged to do so during scheduled maintenance.
