HPD Warns Against Overdue Electric Bill Scam
HPD says that a Hilo business reported on Wednesday that it received a phone call from someone posing as a representative from a local electric company.
During the call, the caller claimed that the business has an overdue electric bill and said that a utility truck would shut off the business’ electricity if the bill wasn’t paid immediately.
The public is cautioned against the response of requests for information or payment through telephone or the internet.
Should you believe a notification from a utility company might be accurate, call the published phone number in the phone book for the service provider to confirm, not a number received via telephone or the internet.
