$10K Granted to The Food Basket

The Food Basket, Hawai’i Island’s Food Bank will be able to provide help to combat hunger in the Puna and Ka’u Districts, thanks to a $10,000 check from the Rotary Club of South Hilo on behalf of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc.

Rotary President Kim Arakawa says the club is honored to provide The Food Basket with the funds after partnering with the Weinberg Friends Program.

“Caring for our community through good works is a cornerstone of what Rotary is all about. Our club members are so grateful to be able to be a part of helping ensure our families, kupuna and keiki are not only fed, but also nourished,” Arakawa said.

The Food Basket will use the money to provide community food drops in Kau and Puna. Each of the drops will include perishable and non-perishable items, including items from the USDA, and seasonal produce and non-perishable foods from The Food Basket’s inventory.

“The Food Basket is really trying to expand our offerings and it is donations like this that will make sure that we can develop and maintain our high quality of service to the community,” said Executive Director of The Food Basket En Young.

Locations and dates have not been finalized for the drops, but The Food Basket expects that the drops will take place on Saturdays in October.
