Local Non-Profit to Receive Large Sum in Grant Money

The Hawai’i County Council will discuss the approval of an $83,500 grant to a local non-profit during a 9 a.m. meeting on Wednesday at the Hawai’i County Building in Hilo.

If approved, the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization Pōhāhā I Ka Lani will be awarded the money through a Public Access, Open Space, and Natural Resources Preservation Maintenance Stewardship Grant.

The grant was approved by the Hawai’i County Council Finance Committee during a meeting in August.

Pōhāhā I Ka Lani was founded in 2009 and works with numerous K-12 schools, universities, community organizations, and ‘ohana to provide hands-on, place based experiences.

According to their website, those involved with the program engage in imu (earthen oven) making, food preparation, and tradiational farming practices.

The group focuses on the preservation and restoration of Hawaiian culture through the ancient village site of Nāpo’opo’o in Waipi’o Valley. This area has more than 400 terraced rock wall enclosures that date back to 1200-1800 A.D.
