HPD Weekly DUI Statistical Breakdown
Twenty-five motorists were arrested on Big Island roadways between Aug. 17 and Aug. 23 for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Of the 25 drivers arrested, nine were involved in traffic crashes and one was under the age of 21. These numbers come from the Hawai’i Police Department’s weekly DUI statistical report.
So far in 2015, a total of 674 DUI arrests have taken place, a 12.4 percent decrease from 2014 where 769 DUI arrests were made during the same time period.
Major accidents remain down compared to last year by 5.5 percent. So far this year, 971 major accidents have taken place on the Big Island, compared to 1,028 during the same time in 2014.
Traffic fatalities have jumped in 2015. Fifteen traffic fatalities have occurred on Big Island roadways, which is 66.7 percent higher than the number one year ago. At this time in 2014, nine traffic fatalities had occurred.
The Hawai’i Police Department reports that of the 15 traffic fatalities, five were due to drugs and three were caused by a combination of drugs and alcohol.
Police will continue roadblocks throughout the island.
